Mammary gland tumor summary
A summary of findings related to mammary gland tumors, most often excerpted from IARC Monographs or the NTP 11th ROC, and, in some cases, supplemented by our evaluation of individual studies and reviews, is available for the priority chemicals and 67 others.
Evidence of increased incidence and/or decreased latency of malignant and/or benign mammary tumors over a wide range of doses in female rats is sufficient to conclude that atrazine is a possible breast carcinogen.

Review
The incidence of mammary tumours was increased in intact Sprague-Dawley females in four studies. Pinter 1990 positive - ["The working group noted that the statistical methods used to evaluate the mammary gland tumors were inappropriately applied to the total number of tumors/number of animals examined rather than to the number of tumour-bearing animals/number of animals examined."] Thakur 1998 critiqued pinter and recalculated with a resulting statistical significance of 0.8 and said dosed lived longer and got their tumors after the controls had died and that one control tumor was not used in the calculations- the working group concluded that the issue raised was valid. Wetzel and Stevens saw an increase in tumor onset but not total numbers at end. Stevens 94 and 98 and 99 positive.

Review
One (Pinter1990) of two studies reports mammary tumros. The Innes studies (combined in CPDB) do not report mammary tumors.

Review
Nominated by Private Individual 1991, NIEHS 1994 Rationale: - Wide use as pre-emergent herbicide that pollutes groundwater - Some studies have indicated tumor induction in mice.
